Dr. Fletcher Fogle Obituary and Death Cause: Atlanta’s Esteemed Sports Medicine Specialist, Passed Away at 53
Dr. Evander Fletcher Fogle, a renowned sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon in Atlanta, Georgia, passed away on January 28, 2024, at the age of 53. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother, friend, and colleague to many people who admired his compassion, professionalism, and expertise.
Who Was Dr. Fletcher Fogle?
Dr. Fletcher Fogle was born on June 15, 1970, in Atlanta, Georgia, to Evander and Florence Fogle. He attended The Westminster Schools, where he excelled in academics and athletics. He spent his senior year abroad in Oldenburg, Germany, where he learned to speak German fluently. He then majored in economics at Stanford University before pursuing his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Fogle completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Emory University Hospital and his fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the University of Southern California. He joined Resurgens Orthopaedics in 2005 and became a partner in 2007. He specialized in shoulder and elbow surgery, knee surgery, arthroscopy, and sports medicine. He was board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and had a subspecialty certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine.
Fletcher was a respected leader and educator in his field. He served as the director of the Resurgens Shoulder and Elbow Center and the co-director of the Resurgens Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. He was also an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Emory University School of Medicine and a clinical instructor at the University of Southern California.

He published numerous articles and book chapters on various topics related to shoulder and elbow surgery and sports medicine. He was a member of several professional associations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Kelly Orthopaedic Society, the Stanford Alumni Association, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Dr. Fogle was a veteran of the US Navy, having served as a staff orthopaedic surgeon in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and as the head of the orthopaedic trauma service at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, California. He took care of wounded Marines and sailors during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and received several commendations for his service.
Fogle was passionate about sports and fitness. He played golf, tennis, basketball, and soccer. He also enjoyed wakeboarding, scuba diving, fishing, and skiing. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Stanford Cardinal. He coached his three sons’ sports teams and supported their athletic endeavors.
A Sudden and Tragic Loss
Dr. Fogle’s death was unexpected and shocking to his family, friends, and colleagues. He suffered a massive heart attack while skiing with his wife and sons at Aspen, Colorado. He was rushed to the Aspen Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jennifer, his sons, Evan, Fletcher, and Grant, his parents, Evander and Florence, his brother, Frank, and his sister, Felicia.
His funeral will be held on February 3, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Resurgens Charitable Foundation, which supports various causes related to orthopaedics, sports medicine, and community health.
Dr. Fletcher Fogle’s death is a huge loss for the Atlanta medical community and the sports medicine field. He was a pioneer, a mentor, a teacher, and a friend to many. He touched countless lives with his kindness, generosity, and excellence. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
