Defection to Ukraine

In October 2022, Kuzminov was deployed to the occupied territories of Ukraine, where Russia had launched a full-scale invasion in April of that year, following years of proxy war and covert operations. He was stationed first in Mariupol, and then in Berdiansk, both coastal cities in the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions, respectively.

Maksim Kuzminov did not participate in any combat actions, as his role was to transport equipment and spare parts for the Russian fighter jets, such as the Su-27, Su-30SM, and Su-35. However, he was not happy with his mission, and he started to question the Russian propaganda and the legitimacy of the war.

He said that he began to study the history and the politics of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, and he realized that he sympathized with Ukraine and its struggle for sovereignty and democracy. He also said that he wanted to resign from the army, but he was unable to do so, as he was threatened with being sent to the front as an infantryman if he did.

In early 2023, he contacted the Ukrainian intelligence, and offered to defect with his helicopter and the valuable cargo he was carrying. He said that he was offered $500,000, new documents, and safety guarantees by the Ukrainian side, and he agreed to the deal. He then planned his escape for more than six months, waiting for the right opportunity to fly close to the Ukrainian border.

On August 9, 2023, he seized his chance, and turned off his radio and transponder, and headed west, towards Poltava, a city in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. He was quickly detected by the Russian forces, who tried to shoot him down with small arms fire, but he managed to evade them and cross the border.

He was also tracked by the Ukrainian air defense, who initially mistook him for an enemy, but then realized that he was a defector, and guided him to a safe landing zone. He was received by the Ukrainian military, who took him into custody and transferred him to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. He was injured during the flight, but he received medical attention and recovered.

Revelations and Rewards

On September 5, 2023, Maksim Kuzminov appeared at a press conference in Kyiv, where he confirmed his defection and explained his motives. He said that he was disgusted by the Russian aggression and the lies of the Kremlin, and that he wanted to help Ukraine in its fight for freedom. He also revealed some details about the Russian military operations in Ukraine, such as the locations, the numbers, and the types of the troops and the aircraft involved.

He said that he had seen hundreds of Russian tanks, armored vehicles, and artillery pieces, as well as dozens of fighter jets and helicopters, deployed in the occupied regions. He also said that he had witnessed the use of banned weapons, such as cluster bombs and incendiary munitions, by the Russian forces, which caused civilian casualties and environmental damage. He also claimed that he had heard rumors about the presence of Russian special forces and mercenaries, such as the Wagner Group, who were responsible for some of the worst atrocities and human rights violations in the war zone.

Kuzminov was praised by the Ukrainian authorities, who called him a hero and a patriot, and thanked him for his courage and his contribution to the Ukrainian cause. He was also rewarded with $500,000, paid in the Ukrainian hryvnia, and promised citizenship and protection by the Ukrainian state. He was also given a new identity and a new name, which were not disclosed to the public.

He said that he was happy with his decision, and that he hoped that his example would inspire other Russian soldiers to defect and join the Ukrainian side. He also said that he wanted to see his family, who had escaped from Russia with the help of the Ukrainian intelligence, and that he planned to start a new life in Ukraine.

Death in Spain

However, Maksim Kuzminov’s new life was short-lived, as he was found dead on February 13, 2024, in the town of Villajoyosa, in the province of Alicante, in Spain. He had been shot several times in the head and chest, and his body was discovered in a rented apartment, where he had been staying for a few days.

The Spanish police launched an investigation into the murder, and said that they were looking for two suspects, who had been seen leaving the scene in a black car. They also said that they were cooperating with the Ukrainian authorities, who had confirmed the identity of the victim as Kuzminov, and who had requested access to the case files.

The news of Kuzminov’s death shocked and saddened the Ukrainian public, who mourned the loss of the pilot who had defected to their side. The Ukrainian officials condemned the killing, and said that they suspected that it was a political assassination, orchestrated by the Russian secret services, who wanted to silence and punish Kuzminov for his defection and his revelations.

They also said that they had provided Kuzminov with security and protection, but that he had decided to travel to Spain on his own, without informing them. They said that they did not know the reason for his trip, or whether he had any contacts or business in Spain. They also said that they would do everything in their power to find and bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime, and that they would honor Kuzminov’s memory and legacy.

Maksim Kuzminov was a Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine with his helicopter and his cargo, in a daring and dramatic act of betrayal and defiance. He exposed some of the secrets and the crimes of the Russian army in Ukraine, and he received a reward and a new identity from the Ukrainian state. However, he was also a target and a threat for the Russian regime, who may have ordered his assassination in Spain, where he was killed in cold blood. His story is a tragic and a heroic one, of a man who chose to follow his conscience and his principles, and who paid with his life for his choice. He will be remembered as a symbol of courage and solidarity, and as a victim of a brutal and a ruthless war.
