American Beauty Plot
According to Wikipedia, the story of American Beauty show Lester Burnham, a middle-aged executive, is unhappy in his marriage to Carolyn, a neurotic and ambitious real estate broker. He also despises his job. Jane, their 16-year-old daughter, despises her parents and lacks self-worth. Frank Fitts, a retired US Marine colonel, his nearly suicidal wife Barbara, and their teenage son Ricky move into the house next door. Ricky uses his camcorder to record the world around him and stores the footage on videotape in his bedroom. He also uses his part-time catering job as a cover for selling marijuana. Frank, a strict disciplinarian who is also abusive, has previously committed Ricky to a mental health facility and sent him to a military academy.
The Fitts family is greeted warmly by the gay couple Jim Olmeyer and Jim Berkley, who are also neighbors of the Burnhams. Frank later discusses the encounter with Ricky in an angry way, which reveals his homophobia.
