The movie brought back Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy as the wicked witch sisters who cause chaos in modern-day Salem. But will there be a Hocus Pocus 3? And if so, what can we expect from the next installment of the spooky comedy franchise? Here’s everything we know so far.
Hocus Pocus 3 release date: When can we expect it?
Disney has not officially announced Hocus Pocus 3 yet, so there is no release date as of now. However, given the success of Hocus Pocus 2, which was the most-watched movie premiere on Disney+ in the US ever, it’s likely that the studio will want to capitalize on the popularity of the Sanderson sisters and make another movie sooner rather than later.
Hocus Pocus 2 was released on September 30, 2022, almost 29 years after the original movie came out in 1993. We hope we won’t have to wait that long for Hocus Pocus 3, but even if Disney decides to fast-track the production, we doubt we’ll see the third movie before Halloween 2024 at the earliest.
Hocus Pocus 3 cast: Who will be back?
The big question is whether Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy will reprise their roles as Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson for Hocus Pocus 3. The sequel ended with the sisters being banished to the afterlife once again after their resurrection by Becca (Whitney Peak), a teenage witch who inherited their spellbook. However, a post-credits scene hinted that they might not be gone for good, as their book was seen twitching ominously.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in September 2022, Midler said she would love to do a third movie if there was a good story: “I’d love to have a franchise — especially a character I love playing. If there was a third one, of course I’d sign on, but I don’t know how. I can’t imagine what the story would be, but I love Winifred, Sarah, Mary and our relationship. It’s good for women. We stick together through hell and high water, but we do cause mayhem, and not many women cause that much mayhem.”
Parker also expressed her interest in returning for Hocus Pocus 3, suggesting that it could be an animated movie: “Kathy had a good idea that the third one should be animated.”1 Najimy, however, seemed less enthusiastic about a third outing: “I feel like we’re done. We’ve pulled every story you could pull out of this. I guess, never say never, but I feel grateful that we got to do it again. I don’t know that there are plans for a third one.”
As for the other cast members of Hocus Pocus 2, it’s possible that some of them could return for Hocus Pocus 3 as well. Whitney Peak’s Becca could take center stage as a new witch protagonist, as producer Adam Shankman hinted at a potential spinoff for her character. Doug Jones, who played Billy Butcherson, the zombie ex-boyfriend of Winifred, might not be back though, as his character finally found peace in the afterlife at the end of the sequel.
Hocus Pocus 3 plot: What will it be about?
The plot of Hocus Pocus 3 is still a mystery, as Disney has not revealed any details about the story or the direction of the sequel. However, we can speculate based on the ending of Hocus Pocus 2 and the hints from the cast and crew.
One possibility is that Hocus Pocus 3 will follow Becca as she learns more about her witch heritage and tries to master her powers. She might also have to deal with the consequences of using the Sanderson sisters’ spellbook, which could attract unwanted attention from other supernatural forces. Perhaps she will even have to team up with the Sanderson sisters again to face a new threat, or maybe they will be her enemies once more.
Another possibility is that Hocus Pocus 3 will be an animated movie, as suggested by Parker and Najimy. This could open up new possibilities for the story and the visuals, as well as make it easier for the cast to reprise their roles without worrying about aging or makeup. An animated movie could also appeal to a younger audience and introduce them to the world of Hocus Pocus.
