2 Siblings Found Dead in a Factory in Jamia Nagar: A Case of Negligence or Murder?

On Tuesday, June 6, 2023, a shocking incident took place in Jamia Nagar, a locality in South East Delhi. Two children, Neeraj (8) and Arti (6), were found dead inside a wooden box at a furniture factory where their father worked as a guard. The police suspect that the siblings entered the box while playing and suffocated to death.
The Discovery of the Bodies
According to the police, the children had lunch with their parents at around 3 pm and then went out to play. When they did not return by 4 pm, their parents and other children started looking for them. They searched the nearby areas but could not find any trace of them.
At around 7 pm, they decided to check the factory where their father, Balbir, was employed. They opened an old wooden box lying in the godown and found the lifeless bodies of Neeraj and Arti inside. They immediately informed the police and rushed the children to a hospital, where they were declared brought dead.
The Police Investigation
The police reached the spot and examined the scene. They also questioned Balbir and his wife, who have five other children. The police said that there were no signs of injury or struggle on the bodies and that it seemed to be a case of accidental asphyxia.
The crime team confirmed that the wooden box was tightly closed and had no ventilation. The box was used to store furniture items and was rarely opened. The police suspect that the children entered the box out of curiosity or for fun and got trapped inside. They could not open the box from inside or call for help.
The police have initiated legal action and are waiting for the post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death. They are also looking into other possible angles, such as murder or foul play.
The Impact of the Incident
The incident shocked and saddened the residents of Jamia Nagar, who expressed their condolences to the bereaved family. Many people said that they knew the children and that they were playful and cheerful.
The incident has also raised questions about the safety and security of children in such areas, where they are exposed to various hazards and dangers. The lack of proper supervision and awareness among parents and guardians is also a matter of concern.
The incident has also highlighted the plight of migrant workers and their families, who live in cramped and unhygienic conditions and work in hazardous environments. They often face exploitation and discrimination from their employers and society.
The incident has also drawn attention to the need for better child protection laws and policies in India, where many children are vulnerable to abuse, violence, trafficking, and exploitation.
The tragic death of Neeraj and Arti is a reminder of the harsh realities faced by many children in India. It also calls for urgent action from all stakeholders to ensure that every child has a safe and happy childhood.
