President Droupadi Murmu to be the Chief Guest at Mauritius National Day: Inaugurate 14 India-Assisted Projects

Mauritius – President Droupadi Murmu is set to embark on a three-day state visit to Mauritius from March 11 to 13, where she will attend the National Day celebrations on March 12 as the chief guest. The official invitation was extended by the Government of Mauritius, which has a close and cordial relationship with India.
The National Day of Mauritius is celebrated on March 12 every year, as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian freedom struggle. It marks the date on which the Dandi Salt March was launched in 1930, a pivotal event in India’s independence movement. The National Day also commemorates the anniversary of Mauritius becoming a republic in 1992.
President Murmu will be the sixth Indian president to grace the Mauritian National Day as the chief guest since 2000, highlighting the longstanding and enduring ties between the two countries. She will be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including Minister of State for External Affairs, V. Muraleedharan, and senior officials.
President Murmu to hold bilateral meetings and inaugurate India-assisted projects
During her visit, President Murmu will hold bilateral meetings with the President of the Republic of Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, and Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. She will also meet the Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly, the Chief Justice of the Mauritian Supreme Court, and important Mauritian leaders.
President Murmu and Prime Minister Jugnauth will jointly inaugurate 14 India-assisted projects, showcasing the growing expanse and multifaceted nature of India’s vibrant development partnership with Mauritius that constitutes a key pillar of the bilateral relationship.

These projects include the Metro Express Project, the New Supreme Court Building, the ENT Hospital, the Social Housing Units, the Renovation of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, the Upgradation of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Indian Culture, and the Construction of the World Hindi Secretariat.
In addition, President Murmu will witness the exchange of important bilateral agreements that seek to further strengthen the robust bilateral institutional collaboration and capacity-building cooperation between the two countries. These agreements cover areas such as health, education, culture, defence, security, and maritime cooperation.
President Murmu to pay homage to Mauritian leaders and address Mauritian youth and diaspora
President Murmu will pay homage to Mauritian leaders at the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, where she will lay wreaths at the memorials of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the father of the nation, and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, the former prime minister and president.
She will also visit the Aapravasi Ghat, where Indian indentured laborers first arrived in Mauritius in the 19th century, and the Intercontinental Slavery Museum, which showcases the history and legacy of slavery and indenture in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region.
President Murmu will also address Mauritian youth at the University of Mauritius, where she will interact with students and faculty members and share her views on the role of youth in nation-building and global affairs.

She will also address socio-cultural organizations, members of the Indian diaspora, and the Indian community at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, where she will highlight the contributions of the Indian community to the development and diversity of Mauritius and the deep cultural and historical bonds that unite the two countries.
President Murmu’s state visit to Mauritius is expected to reaffirm the continued commitment of both countries to further strengthening the bilateral relationship across all sectors and deepening their close people-to-people ties. It will also reflect the shared values and aspirations of the two countries, which are both vibrant democracies, committed to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region and beyond.
