Foo Fighters Welcome Josh Freese as New Drummer After Taylor Hawkins’ Death

The rock band Foo Fighters has introduced their new drummer, Josh Freese, who will replace the late Taylor Hawkins, who passed away in March 2022. Freese is a veteran musician who has played with many famous artists, such as Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, The Offspring, Paramore, and Blink-182. He joined the band during their live stream event on May 21, where they performed some of their new songs from their upcoming album, “But Here We Are”.
A Tribute to Taylor Hawkins
Foo Fighters’ new album, which will be released on June 2, is a tribute to their former drummer and friend, Taylor Hawkins, who died unexpectedly at age 50 from cardiac arrest while the group was touring in Colombia. The band canceled all their remaining tour dates and took some time off to mourn and heal. The album is described as a “brutally honest and emotionally raw response” to a year of “staggering losses” and a “testament to the healing powers of music, friendship and family”. The first single from the album, “Rescued”, reflects the band’s hope and resilience after the tragedy.
Josh Freese: A Prolific and Versatile Drummer
Josh Freese is no stranger to the Foo Fighters family. He was part of the star-studded lineup at the band’s tribute concert for Hawkins at London’s Wembley Stadium in September 2022. He also shared a close bond with Hawkins, as they both grew up in Orange County and joked about being the only two guys from OC in the music industry. Freese has a long and impressive resume as a drummer, having worked with dozens of bands and artists across different genres.

He is known for his versatility, skill, and professionalism. He said in an interview with EW in 2009 that he enjoys playing with different musicians and learning from them. “I work with famous people, but I’m kind of under the radar,” he said.
I’m probably famous to the drummer kid that lives down the street from me, but that’s about it.”
Foo Fighters’ New Tour Dates
Foo Fighters are ready to hit the road again with their new drummer and their new album. They will kick off their tour on May 24 at Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion in New Hampshire and conclude on Nov. 26 at the Grand Prix race-day concert in Abu Dhabi. They will also headline several festivals, such as Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo and Austin City Limits.
Fans can expect to hear some of their classic hits as well as their new songs that pay homage to Hawkins. The band said in a statement that they are excited to share their music with their fans again and to honor Hawkins’ legacy.
“We miss him every day, but we know he would want us to keep rocking,” they said.
