What are some safety tips for hillwalkers?

Hillwalking is a popular activity in Scotland that offers many benefits such as physical exercise, mental well-being, and scenic views. However, it also comes with some risks and challenges, especially in remote and rugged areas such as the Scottish Highlands. Therefore, it is important for hillwalkers to follow some safety tips to ensure their own welfare and that of others.

Some of the safety tips are:

  • Plan your route carefully and check the weather forecast before you go.
  • Inform someone of your plans and expected return time.
  • Carry appropriate clothing, footwear, equipment, food, water, and a map and compass.
  • Be aware of your own abilities and limitations, and do not take unnecessary risks.
  • Stay on marked paths and trails, and avoid crossing rivers or streams unless there is a safe bridge or ford.
  • If you get lost or injured, stay calm and try to find shelter or signal for help.
  • If you see someone in trouble or distress, call 999 or 112 and ask for mountain rescue.

Conclusion

The case of Charles Kelly is a tragic reminder of the dangers that hillwalkers can face in the Scottish Highlands. His family and friends are grieving for their loss, while the public is mourning for a fellow nature lover. His death also highlights the importance of following safety guidelines when venturing into the outdoors. Hillwalking can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience, but it also requires caution and preparation.
