She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend who touched many lives with her bright spirit and fierce determination. She battled Cystic Fibrosis and colon cancer for most of her life, but never let her challenges stop her from living fully and joyfully.
Early Life and Family
Holly Seay was born on April 11, 1995, to Jeanne and James Thrift. She grew up in Gainesville with her two brothers, Christian Thrift and Justin Summerour. She attended Gainesville High School, where she excelled academically and participated in various extracurricular activities. She graduated in 2013 with honors and a scholarship to attend the University of Georgia.
Holly had a passion for learning and exploring new things. She majored in journalism and minored in history at UGA, where she also joined the student newspaper, The Red & Black. She wrote articles on various topics, ranging from campus events to local politics. She graduated in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree and a dream of becoming a professional journalist.
Holly met her future husband, Cameron Seay, at UGA. They were both members of the same journalism class and bonded over their shared interests and goals. They dated for two years before getting engaged in 2019. They married on October 10, 2020, in a beautiful ceremony at The Chapel in Gainesville. They settled in their hometown and adopted two dogs, Winnie and Lily, who became their fur babies.
Career and Achievements
Holly pursued her career as a journalist with enthusiasm and dedication. She landed her first job as a reporter for The Gainesville Times, where she covered local news and human interest stories. She quickly gained recognition for her writing skills and investigative reporting. She won several awards from the Georgia Press Association for her work on topics such as education, health care, and social justice.
In 2021, Holly was offered a position as an editor and author for The New York Times Magazine. She accepted the opportunity and moved to New York City with her husband. She continued to write articles for the magazine, as well as books on various subjects. She published three books: The Fight for Freedom: A History of Civil Rights Movements in America, The Breath of Life: A Personal Journey with Cystic Fibrosis, and The Power of Hope: Inspiring Stories of People Who Overcame Adversity. Her books received critical acclaim and became bestsellers.
Holly was also an advocate for Cystic Fibrosis awareness and research. She was diagnosed with the genetic disorder when she was six months old. A memorial service for Holly will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at 2 p.m., at The Chapel (3001 McEver Rd #5563 Gainesville, GA 30504). A celebration of life will follow at the same location at 3 p.m.
