A man named Jason Cachuela, 44, shot and killed his estranged wife, Theresa Cachuela, 33, in front of her mother and other shoppers. He then fled the scene and later died by suicide. The motive for the shooting is still unclear, but it is believed that Jason Cachuela had been threatening to kill himself and his wife for months.
Theresa was a social media influencer and a mother of three. She had over 100k followers on Instagram, where she shared her beauty tips, lifestyle photos, and motivational messages. She was also a successful entrepreneur who owned several beauty businesses in Hawaii. She was described by her family and friends as a luminous spirit who touched many lives with her kindness and generosity.
The tragic incident
According to witnesses, the shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at the parking lot of Pearlridge Center. Cachuela was meeting her mother, Lucita Aninihoa, for some last-minute Christmas shopping at the mall. They were chatting happily when they heard gunshots nearby. They looked up and saw Jason Cachuela holding a gun and pointing it at his wife.
Lucita Aninihoa said she tried to intervene and stop him from hurting her daughter. She said she screamed “Stop! Stop! Stop!” but he ignored her pleas. He then shot Theresa Cachuela multiple times in the chest and abdomen. She fell to the ground bleeding profusely.
The other shoppers and employees who witnessed the shooting were terrified and panicked. Some ran away while others called 911 or tried to help Theresa. Lucita Aninihoa said she held her daughter’s hand until paramedics arrived.
She was rushed to Queen’s Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. She underwent surgery but could not be saved. She died shortly after midnight on Saturday.
Jason Cachuela fled the scene after shooting his wife. He drove to Waipahu, where he parked his car near a park and took his own life with another gunshot wound to his head.
The police arrived at the scene around 11:30 p.m. They found Jason Cachuela’s body inside his car with a note that read “I’m sorry”. They also recovered several guns from his car.
The police are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and whether Jason Cachuela had any mental health issues or history of domestic violence.
