But who is the man behind the prime minister? What is his personal story, his political career, and his vision for the country? In this article, we will explore the life and achievements of Anthony, from his humble beginnings to his historic victory.
Early Life and Family
Anthony Norman Albanese was born on 2 March 1963 in Sydney, Australia. He was raised by his single mother, Maryanne Therese Albanese, who was of Irish descent. His mother suffered from chronic rheumatoid arthritis and relied on a government disability pension to support herself and her son. They lived in public housing in Camperdown, an inner-western suburb of Sydney.

Albanese did not know his father until he was an adult. He grew up believing that his father had died in a car accident, but his mother revealed to him when he was 14 that he was the result of a shipboard romance with an Italian steward on the cruise ship where she had traveled to Europe.
She had returned to Sydney pregnant, unmarried, and Catholic, and had invented a fictional marriage and death for the man whose surname she had taken. After his mother’s death, Albanese searched for his father and found him in Italy. In 2009, he traveled to Italy to meet himself and his half-siblings for the first time.

Education
Anthony Albanese inherited from his mother a loyalty to three fundamental institutions: Catholicism, the South Sydney Rabbitohs rugby league team, and the Australian Labor Party. He attended St Joseph’s Primary School and St Mary’s Cathedral College in Sydney, where he excelled academically and became interested in politics. He then studied economics at the University of Sydney, where he was active in student politics and joined the Labor Party.
Political Career
Anthony began his political career as a journalist, working for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers. He then became the assistant general secretary of the New South Wales Labor Party for six years in the 1990s. In 1996, he was elected to the federal parliament as the member for Grayndler, a diverse and progressive electorate in Sydney’s inner west. He has held the seat ever since, winning nine consecutive elections.
Albanese rose through the ranks of the Labor Party, becoming a senior figure and a leader of the Labor Left faction. He served in various shadow ministerial portfolios, including employment services and training, regional development, infrastructure and tourism, and environment and heritage. He was also the manager of opposition business in the House of Representatives from 2006 to 2007.

In 2007, Anthony became a minister in the Labor government led by Kevin Rudd. He was appointed as the minister for infrastructure and transport, and the leader of the house. He also introduced reforms to improve road safety, maritime security, and aviation regulation.
Achievements

He also became the minister for regional development and local government in 2010, and the minister for broadband, communications, and the digital economy in 2013. He was a vocal critic of the leadership conflicts between Rudd and Gillard and urged the party to unite and focus on policy.

In 2013, Anthony became the deputy prime minister and the deputy leader of the Labor Party, after Kevin Rudd regained the leadership from Julia Gillard. He also retained his ministerial portfolios and his role as the leader of the house. He was a key campaigner for the Labor Party in the 2013 federal election, which resulted in a defeat to the Liberal-National Coalition led by Tony Abbott.
In 2013, Anthony contested the Labor leadership against Bill Shorten, following Kevin Rudd’s resignation. He won the support of 60% of the party members, but lost to Shorten, who secured 55% of the caucus vote. He then became a shadow minister in Shorten’s opposition, holding various portfolios, such as infrastructure and transport, cities, tourism, and communications.
Rise To Fame
In 2019, Albanese became the leader of the Labor Party and the leader of the opposition, after Bill Shorten stepped down following the 2019 federal election, which saw the Coalition win a third term under Scott Morrison. He also shifted his political stance to the center, and adopted a more pragmatic and conciliatory approach to policy and politics.
In 2022, Anthony Albanese became the prime minister of Australia, after leading the Labor Party to a historic victory in the 2022 federal election.
