Biography
Manohar Joshi was born on December 2, 1937 (age: 86 years, as of 2023), in Nandavi, a village in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. He belonged to a Marathi-speaking Brahmin family. His father, Gajanan Krishna Joshi, was a school teacher, and his mother, Saraswati Gajanan, was a homemaker. He had two brothers and a sister.
He completed his primary and secondary education in Nandavi and Alibag. He then moved to Mumbai, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Siddharth College. He also obtained a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Mumbai. He was interested in physics, and wrote his doctoral thesis on spectroscopy in Hindi, becoming the first researcher to do so.

Career and Politics
Manohar Joshi started his career as an officer in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in 1961. However, he soon quit his job and founded the Kohinoor Technical Institute, a vocational training center for semi-skilled youths. He also established the Kohinoor Group of Companies, which diversified into various sectors such as education, hospitality, real estate, and media.
He joined the Shiv Sena, a regional political party, in 1967, and became one of its founding members. He was influenced by the charismatic leader of the party, Bal Thackeray, who advocated for the rights and interests of the Marathi-speaking people of Maharashtra. He was elected as a municipal councilor of Mumbai from 1968 to 1972, and as the mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977. He was also nominated as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1972 to 1989.
He contested and won the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election from the Dadar constituency in 1990, and became the leader of the opposition in the assembly from 1990 to 1991. He led the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance to victory in the 1995 assembly election, and became the first chief minister of Maharashtra from the Shiv Sena. He held the post from 1995 to 1999, and implemented several developmental and welfare schemes in the state.
He was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, from the Mumbai North Central constituency in 1999. He was appointed as the Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government. He resigned from the post in 2002, and became the speaker of the Lok Sabha, a position he held till 2004. He was the first speaker from Maharashtra, and the first from the Shiv Sena.
Manohar Joshi was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, from Maharashtra in 2006, and served till 2012. He was also the leader of the Shiv Sena in the Rajya Sabha. Death and Legacy
