Vishnu Dev Sahay sworn in as Chhattisgarh’s fourth Chief Minister
Vishnu Dev Sahay, a tribal leader and former Union Minister of State for Steel, took oath as the fourth Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh on Sunday, 13 December 2023. He was elected as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party on Saturday, after the party secured a majority in the 2023 Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections.
Sai, 59, was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan at a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Raipur. He was accompanied by two deputy chief ministers, Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma, who also took oath along with him. The BJP won 54 seats out of the 90-member assembly, while the incumbent Indian National Congress (INC) won 35 seats.
Vishnu, who hails from the Bagiya village in Jashpur district, has a long political career spanning over three decades. He started as a sarpanch in his village and went on to become a two-time MLA, a four-time MP, and a state party president thrice. He was also a Union Minister of State for Steel in the first Modi ministry from 2014 to 2019.
He is known for his calm and composed personality and his strong grassroots connection. He is credited with bringing several developmental projects and schemes to his constituency and the state, especially in the fields of agriculture, irrigation, education, health, and infrastructure. He is also praised for his efforts to uplift the tribals and the poor and to maintain law and order and communal harmony.
After taking oath, Sahay thanked the people of Chhattisgarh for their trust and support and vowed to work for the welfare and development of the state. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and former Chief Minister Raman Singh for their guidance and blessings. He said that he would fulfil the promises made by the BJP in its manifesto and implement the schemes launched by the central government.
Vishnu also expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who congratulated him on his victory and wished him success. Baghel, who belongs to the OBC Sahu community, had led the Congress to power in 2018 by defeating the 15-year rule of the BJP under Raman Singh. Baghel had focused on the issues of farmers, tribals, and women and had launched several popular schemes such as the Rajiv Gandhi Kisan Nyay Yojana, the Narva, Garva, Ghurva, Bari Yojana, and the Haat Bazaar Clinic Yojana.
He faces several challenges as the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Naxal insurgency, the unemployment crisis, and the environmental degradation. He also has to balance the aspirations of the various social groups, such as the OBCs, the SCs, the STs, and the upper castes, who have different demands and expectations from the government. He has to prove his mettle as a leader who can deliver on the BJP’s slogan of “Vikas, Vishwas, aur Vishnu Deo Sai”.
