Girish Bapat, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Member of Parliament from Pune, passed away on March 29, 2023, at the age of 72 after a prolonged illness. He was admitted to the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, where he was in critical condition and on life support. The news of his death was confirmed by BJP Pune President Jagdish Mulik.
Girish Bapat was a prominent leader of the BJP in Maharashtra and had a long political career spanning over four decades. He served as a minister in the Maharashtra government and held several portfolios including Food and Civil Supplies, Parliamentary Affairs, and Housing. He was also a Member of the Legislative Assembly from Kasba Peth constituency for six terms before being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014 and 2019.
Bapat was known for his contribution to the development of Pune and was credited with several infrastructural projects in the city including the construction of the Pune Metro Rail project and the Pune International Airport. He was also known for his work in the field of education and was instrumental in setting up several educational institutions in Pune.

The news of Girish Bapat’s demise was met with condolences from several leaders across the political spectrum. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and said that Bapat’s contributions to the development of Pune and Maharashtra would be remembered. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Chief Sharad Pawar also expressed his condolences and said that Bapat’s demise was a loss for the state of Maharashtra.
Bapat’s funeral was held at the Vaikunth Crematorium in Pune, and his mortal remains were kept at his residence in Shaniwar Peth for people to pay their last respects [[1]]. His death is a significant loss for the BJP and the people of Pune, who will remember him for his contribution to the development of the city and the state of Maharashtra.
