Aaron Bushnell Video Trending Online on Twitter, Reddit! Air Force Footage Of Self Immolation

A shocking video of a man in a US Air Force uniform setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, DC, has gone viral on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit. The man, identified as Aaron Bushnell, 25, of San Antonio, Texas, reportedly died of his injuries on Monday, February 26, 2024.

What Happened?

According to various sources, Bushnell began live streaming to Twitch as he approached the embassy on Sunday afternoon, declaring that he “will no longer be complicit in genocide” and that he was “about to engage in an extreme act of protest”. He then poured liquid over himself and lit himself on fire, while repeatedly shouting, “Free Palestine!”

The video was quickly removed from Twitch for violating its guidelines, but copies of it were circulated online by other users. The footage shows Bushnell standing in front of the embassy gate and identifying himself as a member of the US Air Force. He also says his name and rank, which have not been officially confirmed by the authorities.

The video also shows the reaction of the security personnel at the scene, who can be heard asking, “May I help you, sir?” and yelling at Bushnell to get down on the ground when he was on fire. One person sprayed him with a fire extinguisher, while another appeared to draw his gun.

Bushnell was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). The MPD said it is working with the Secret Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms to investigate the incident. The Israeli Embassy did not comment on the incident but said that no embassy staff were injured.

Why Did He Do It?

Bushnell’s motive for his self-immolation is not clear, but it is believed that he was protesting against the ongoing war in Gaza, which has killed more than 29,000 people, mostly civilians, since Israel launched its invasion of the enclave in retaliation for Hamas’ surprise attack on October 7, 2023. The war has sparked widespread condemnation and demonstrations across the world, demanding an immediate cease-fire and an end to the US military support for Israel.

Bushnell is not the first person to set himself on fire in front of an Israeli diplomatic mission. In December 2023, a protester did the same thing in front of the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, Georgia. Police found a Palestinian flag near the scene, but did not confirm whether the act was a form of protest.

Aaron Bushnell committed suicide

Self-immolation is a rare and extreme form of protest that has been used by some activists and dissidents throughout history, especially in Asia. Some of the most famous cases include Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk who burned himself to death in Saigon in 1963 to protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government; Mohamed Bouazizi, a Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire in 2010 to protest against the corruption and oppression of the Tunisian regime, sparking the Arab Spring; and Jan Palach, a Czech student who immolated himself in 1969 to protest against the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.

Bushnell’s video has generated a lot of reactions on social media, with some people expressing sympathy and admiration for his courage and sacrifice, while others condemning and criticizing his action as foolish and wasteful. Some people also questioned his mental health and his affiliation with the US Air Force.

On X, the hashtag #AaronBushnell was trending, with many users sharing the video and their opinions. Some of the tweets are:

  • “Aaron Bushnell was a coward and a traitor. He betrayed his country and his comrades by setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli Embassy. He was brainwashed by the terrorist propaganda of Hamas and Iran. He deserved to die. #Israel #AaronBushnell”
  • “Aaron Bushnell was a victim of war and trauma. He suffered from PTSD and depression. He needed help and support, not judgment and hate. He was a human being, not a political statement. #MentalHealth #AaronBushnell”

On Reddit, a post asking for opinions on Bushnell’s video received more than 10,000 comments, with a mix of views and arguments. Some of the comments are:

  • “I think he was brave and noble. He sacrificed himself for a cause he believed in. He wanted to draw attention to the atrocities happening in Gaza and the role of the US in enabling them. He was a true patriot and a freedom fighter. I respect him and I hope his death will not be in vain.”
  • “I think he was stupid and selfish. He wasted his life for nothing. He did not change anything by setting himself on fire. He only caused pain and grief to his family and friends. He was a fool and a fanatic. I despise him and I hope his death will be forgotten.”
  • “I think he was desperate and hopeless. He saw no other way to express his frustration and anger at the situation in Gaza and the US. He felt powerless and helpless. He was a victim and a martyr. I pity him and I hope his death will be a wake-up call.”

What Now?

Bushnell’s video has raised many questions and debates about the war in Gaza, the US involvement in it, and the role of the US military in foreign conflicts. It has also highlighted the issue of mental health and suicide among veterans and active duty members of the armed forces, who may face stress, trauma, and moral dilemmas in their service.

Bushnell’s video has also challenged the public perception and opinion of the US Air Force, which is one of the branches of the US military that provides air and space support to the US and its allies. The Air Force has not yet released an official statement on Bushnell’s incident, but it has confirmed that he was an active duty member and that it is providing assistance to his family.

Bushnell’s video has also sparked a discussion about the ethics and legality of livestreaming and sharing such graphic and disturbing content on social media platforms, and the responsibility and accountability of the users and the companies that host them.

Bushnell’s video has undoubtedly left a mark on the history and the memory of the war in Gaza, the US Air Force, and the social media culture. Whether his video will have any lasting impact on the policies and the actions of the governments and the people involved in the conflict, remains to be seen.
