She also appeared on Comedy Central’s Up Next, a showcase of emerging comedians, and co-created and co-starred in a digital series called Ayo and Rachel Are Single, with her friend and fellow comedian Rachel Sennott. The series, which aired on Comedy Central’s website and YouTube channel in 2020, follows the misadventures of two single women in New York City who are obsessed with finding love. She said, “We wanted to make something that was funny and relatable, but also showed the diversity and complexity of being a young woman today.”
Edebiri also pursued a career as a television writer, landing jobs on shows such as The Rundown with Robin Thede, a late-night talk show hosted by comedian Robin Thede, and Sunnyside, a sitcom created by and starring Kal Penn. She joined the writing staff of Big Mouth, a popular animated series about puberty, for its fourth season in 2020.
She also auditioned and was selected as the new voice of Missy Foreman-Greenwald, one of the main characters, after the previous voice actor, Jenny Slate, stepped down from the role so that it could be played by a Black actress. She said, “I was a fan of the show before I worked on it, so it was surreal and exciting to be part of it. Missy is such a sweet and quirky character, and I wanted to honor her essence while also bringing my own perspective to her.”
Ayo Edebiri also worked as a writer and actress on Dickinson, a historical comedy-drama series about the life of poet Emily Dickinson, starring Hailee Steinfeld. She played Hattie, a maid who works for the Dickinson family and becomes friends with Emily. She said, “I loved working on Dickinson because it was such a creative and fun show. It was also a great opportunity to learn from Hailee, who is an amazing actress and singer.”
Her biggest breakthrough came in 2022, when she landed the lead role of Sydney Adamu in The Bear, a comedy-drama series created by Christopher Storer, who also worked on Dickinson. The series follows the lives and relationships of a group of friends who work at a trendy restaurant in Los Angeles. Edebiri plays Sydney, a talented and ambitious chef who struggles with her personal and professional life. She said, “The Bear is a show that I’m very proud of, because it’s funny, smart, and heartfelt. It also showcases a diverse and talented cast of actors who are not often seen on TV. Sydney is a complex and flawed character, who is also very passionate and driven. She’s someone who I relate to a lot, and I hope the audience does too.”
Edebiri’s performance as Sydney earned her critical acclaim and recognition, including a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. She also became the first Black woman to win the Golden Globe in that category since Tracee Ellis Ross in 2017. She said, “It was an incredible and humbling experience to win the Golden Globe and be nominated for the Emmy. I’m so grateful to the people who supported me and voted for me. I also want to thank the other nominees, who are all amazing and inspiring women. I hope this opens more doors for Black women and women of color in comedy and drama.”

Edebiri plays Josie, a neurotic and insecure woman who tries to find love and happiness in Los Angeles.
