How did Mallory Beach Die and what happened on February 24, 2019?

Mallory Beach, 19, was killed when a boat with Paul Murdaugh, then 19, and five other people on board crashed near Parris Island, South Carolina, on February 24, 2019. Morgan Doughty, Miley Altman, Connor Cook, Anthony Cook, and Paul Murdaugh were also on board. Four of the five survivors required hospitalization due to injuries. Paul Murdaugh’s blood alcohol level was 0.24, which is three times the legal limit, after the accident.

According to investigators, the group of friends had been drinking despite being underage throughout the night. Paul Murdaugh was captured on surveillance footage purchasing alcohol at a convenience store and taking shots later that evening, just before the fatal crash. A cooler containing beer was also recovered from the boat accident by law enforcement personnel.

According to accounts from some of the people who survived, Paul Murdaugh’s driving before the accident was erratic. Beach was thrown into the water when the boat collided with the Archers Creek Bridge around 2:20 in the morning. Connor Cook told the emergency services when he called 911 and said: –

We’re in a boat crash on Archer’s Creek…There are six of us and one is missing,”

The remaining four passengers were transported to a nearby hospital when emergency personnel arrived. Staying at the scene was Anthony Cook’s decision, as evidenced by his visibly distraught appearance on surveillance video. Hospital staff told investigators that they saw Alex Murdaugh trying to talk to the other survivors by moving from room to room, according to the reports.

Additionally, a security guard stated that he overheard him saying, “She’s gone. Rest assured.” More than a week later, on March 3, 2019, approximately five miles downstream from the spot where the boat capsized, Beach’s body was discovered. She had drowned and suffered blunt force trauma to the head, according to the reports.

Charges on Murdaugh Family

Mallory’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Murdaughs in March 2019, claiming that Paul’s mother Maggie, who has since passed away, was aware that her son was intoxicated when the group went boating and that Paul’s older brother Buster had provided his ID so that the teens could buy alcohol. Paul was charged with three felony counts of boating while intoxicated on April 18, 2019, on Mallory’s 20th birthday.

These charges included causing Mallory’s death and seriously injuring two other passengers. Paul was released on bail while awaiting trial after pleading not guilty. Because he was killed on June 7, 2021, he would never serve any time in court.

On July 15, 2022, Alex Murdaugh was charged with the double homicide of his wife Maggie, and son. Alex has denied the charge. Alex Murdaugh testified for himself.
