Yousef’s first major terrorist attack was the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. He arrived in New York City in September 1992, using a fake Iraqi passport. He contacted Omar Abdel Rahman, a radical Egyptian cleric who preached jihad against the United States and Israel. He recruited several followers of Rahman to help him carry out his plan. He rented a van and filled it with a 1,500-pound bomb made of urea, nitric acid, and fuel oil.

He drove the van to the underground garage of the World Trade Center and detonated the bomb on February 26, 1993. The blast created a huge crater and damaged the structure of the building. Six people were killed, including a pregnant woman, and more than a thousand were injured. Yousef’s goal was to topple the towers and kill tens of thousands of people, but he failed to achieve that. He escaped to Pakistan the same day, leaving behind a letter claiming responsibility and threatening more attacks.

Ramzi Yousef next plot was even more ambitious and deadly. He devised a plan to blow up 11 U.S.-bound airliners over the Pacific Ocean, using small bombs hidden in life jackets or soda cans. He also planned to assassinate Pope John Paul II during his visit to the Philippines, and to crash a plane into the CIA headquarters in Virginia. This plan was called the Bojinka plot, which means “big bang” in Arabic. He tested his bombs on two flights in December 1994, killing one passenger and injuring several others.

He was ready to execute the full-scale attack in January 1995, but his plot was foiled by a fire in his apartment in Manila, where he stored his explosives and equipment. The Philippine police raided his apartment and found his laptop, which contained the details of his plan. They alerted the U.S. authorities, who issued a worldwide alert for Yousef and his associates.

Yousef was also involved in two attempts to assassinate Benazir Bhutto, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, in 1993. He was hired by Islamist militants who opposed her secular and pro-Western policies. He tried to kill her with a bomb and a sniper, but both attempts failed. He was injured by a detonator explosion in one of the attempts and had to seek medical treatment.

He was flown to the United States, where he was tried and convicted for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the Bojinka plot.

Imran Khan accuses Pakistan opposition of selling terrorist Ramzi Yousef to US

Earlier in 2022 then Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan launched a scathing attack on the opposition parties, accusing them of selling Ramzi Yousef, a convicted terrorist in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, to the US for money. Khan made this allegation as he faces a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly of Pakistan.

Ramzi Yousef is a Kuwait-born Pakistani who was the main planner and executor of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, which killed six people and injured over a thousand. He was also involved in other plots to cause mass destruction and death, such as the Bojinka plot to blow up 11 airliners over the Pacific Ocean, and the assassination attempts on Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He is currently serving two life sentences plus 240 years in a maximum-security prison in Colorado, USA.

Earlier Khan claimed that the opposition parties, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), had bypassed the Pakistani laws and handed over Yousef to the Americans in exchange for dollars. He also said that the opposition had no regard for the sovereignty and dignity of the country, and that they were only interested in protecting their corruption and looting.

Khan also said that the opposition was trying to destabilize the country and create chaos by spreading false propaganda and misinformation. He said that the opposition was afraid of his government’s accountability drive, which had exposed their corruption and money laundering. He said that the opposition was using the no-confidence motion as a pressure tactic to blackmail him and force him to give them a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), which is a legal amnesty for politicians accused of corruption.
