Soul Hackers 2 Release Date:- Whenever roleplaying game fans are talking about the best RPG effort typically names like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest come up. But in the last couple of years, there has been so much love for Atlas. These are the people that make games like Shin Megami Tensei. And of course, the perfect Persona Series.

Well, Soul Hackers, this is their new project. It’s a sequel that feels better, but also in a lot of ways, much more low-budget. This game is fun, but it’s certainly very, very lacking. Let’s talk about that. What’s up gamers, Dreamcast guy here?  So let’s go through the goods, the bad, and the uglies.

But let me just start by saying I am a big fan of Atlas in general. I love their games. But already I’m a big fan of Soul Hackers.

I even played the incredibly rare original 3ds games. So going into Soul Hackers 2 my interest was basically how is this going to play in 2022? Is this worth the price tag? Honestly, the biggest thing about this that works well is that it’s still an incredibly tight role-playing game.

The Matrix gimmick of Soul Hackers is that it is a turn-based RPG with a lot of different elemental magic in it fire lightning, ice, wind magic, and psychic magic, but additionally, with these elemental types, there’s this interesting monster capture system. So in Seoul hackers, were playing as this digital person named Ringo, she’s this entity that’s been just 3d printed, essentially by the Internet, which in this universe is God.

 Now if that sounds bizarre, buckle up, because all of Soul Hacker’s story is completely bonkers. Well, she has been tasked with stopping the apocalypse is he in this universe? What’s going on is that certain people have this thing called the covenant where your soul is sort of supercharged, if you managed to get all 5 of the covenants that exist in the world at once, you can end the world so you sort of summons the devil, which is called the Great one. None of this is spoilers, I promise.

Soul Hackers 2 Gameplay, Story, Details & More

 It’s the opening. the cutscene is people trying to collect the souls, and now you as the sole hacker need to stop them. But what does this mean? It essentially boils down to the fact that we’re going through a series of dungeons to try and capture demons level up and get a bunch of very big special attacks. So whenever you’re playing this game, the whole idea of it is that you’re sort of just trying to hunt people down in this Neo version of Tokyo. This is short.

But in a timeline where everything is still surprisingly normal whenever you like, you can choose to leave the dungeons and just wander around the cities to see people hanging out shopping, just lingering in the streets leveling up their monsters, or sometimes just chilling at the bar.

The conversation is a heavy focus of Soul Hackers too much like a way a lot of these Atlas games are whenever you’re exploring these different environments and trying to solve the dungeons, it’s essentially trying to gather clues to stop the next covenant holder to make sure that you know, the world doesn’t get suddenly snapped out of existence like Thanos.

But part of this comes down to friendship. Now, anybody who’s played any of these previous Atlas games, anything like persona and stuff know a lot about the trust system. By being nice to your friends, there are a lot of different dialogue options in an argument, you can take somebody’s side but also, while you’re hanging out in the town, you can choose to go on dates with a specific person or just hang out and share some drinks. You can sit down in a safe house and have big extended dinners to build up trust. And trust is a different magic system.

Soul Hackers 2 Wiki, Spoilers, New Features

So here’s my biggest problem with Soul Hackers. Honestly, the design of the dungeons itself completely sucks. Now, you may think I’m repeating footage here because you just keep seeing the same couple of environments.

The entire game is pretty much just a subway that you visit multiple times a doc that you visit multiple times and in an abandoned office building. That’s pretty much it.

There’s one final dungeon that’s pretty decent, but I’m not going to show it to you because it’s spoilers, but this entire game is just these couple locations again and again and again. And I can’t help but feel a bit bored with it. Because these dungeons are very, very long, but not in a fun way.

 Like, look at this map. This dungeon took me about seven hours to get through. And honestly, I started watching podcasts and stuff towards the end of it because there were no cutscenes there were no additional plot elements. It was just seven hours of going through tunnels filled with hundreds of random battles.

Hundreds of a guy show up, he punches you in the face and you got to fight back, you walk into their 10 feet. That’s because of the random battle system that exists in Seoul hackers 2. So while you’re exploring, you do get a chance to just freely move about but your character II Even though she can swing a sword for some reason.

That’s just how you initiate a combat if you managed to hit an enemy that’s walking towards you, with your sword, you get an opening attack. Now it is possible to knock down enemies and run away. And trust me after a bit, once you hit the adequate level for a particular dungeon, you need to run you need to bash and run because otherwise, you’re going to waste so much time, just standing there finding the same three enemies again and again and again and again. But there is an emphasis that makes you want to stay in these dungeons longer.

Which is called the demon recon system. So whenever you enter each of these dungeons, all of your little minions which are part of your team go out and get dispersed, they kind of just sprinkled themselves throughout the dungeon into all the wrong paths.

If you need to go right to progress the story by going left, you’ll typically find one of your demons standing there. Now they’ll give you items, they’ll heal you or they’ll give you an all-new demon. By fighting in these dungeons, say there’s like a big, giant, evil angel-looking guy. If you kill them over and over and over again.

Then when you find one of your demons, typically, you can now recruit that style of the demon. Now, this brings me to my very favorite aspect of Soul Hackers, both one and two. But this is way better and in Soul Hackers 2 the way that leveling up your little minion’s works is absolutely genius. So while you’re playing this game, your demons just get experience points via battling pretty typical stuff. But your characters level up as well.

Your character will have a base stat like strength or intelligence and stuff like that. But the different demons you have equipped are sort of like the magic you’ve unlocked. But here’s the interesting twist. As your demons level up, they can only level up so much, they can only get so strong, and they slowly learn new skills, new fire magic, better versions of healing, and stuff like that.

But because they can only learn so many skills. What this means is that you constantly need to be switching out new demons. Even if you love a particular minion, it’s very advantageous to constantly switch out to members of your team trying out different monsters, because when a character has learned everything they can when the demon is maxed out, they give you a special item.

Which gives you a passive bonus. These are called mistakes. They’re like accessories. So leveling up a fire demon can sometimes give you like a trinket that’s going to give you 20 or even 40% Bonus fire damage.

So now you’re incentivized to pick up a new demon that’s going to have new abilities just to see if maybe it’ll give you something else that will further your roster, increase your casting ability, and honestly give you even better skills. Some of the random stuff you’ll learn is completely bonkers. Like I got this thing at one point called a Sabbath heel. So this little creature here was called Jack Frost.

Now, whenever you’re doing things in these battles, by hitting somebody’s weak point, like if they’re weak to ice or weak to electricity, by striking an enemy’s element of weakness again and again and again, you build up stacks, which at the end of the turn is unleashed as the super attack called the Sabbath.

Now, because of Jack Frost’s passive ability here, it made it where, whenever and unleashed by a giant special attack, I will get healed.

This broke the balance of the game and the funniest way possible. But this brings me to the other upgrade system, which is called mergers. So hackers too do have a standard upgrade system where you can like tweak the balancing of your gear, make it so you have more defense or more attack or more striking of elements or weaknesses, like that kind of stuff. But additionally, the more interesting aspect of it is that you can go here and merge two demons.

So you can choose to make something that’s much higher level, you can form completely and do demons that have way more skills, and it resets their learning abilities, which means that if you take like a fire demon, and an ice demon, maybe you can merge them into a giant serpent, but you can also keep some of their skills be hereditary. With enough of these mergers, you can breed creatures that have every single elemental magic and all sorts of new skills, and it resets their learning abilities.

So now they can level up and give you even better Mystique add-ons. It’s such a great system because honestly, it constantly makes you excited to get that new demon and makes it work. Even if you’re particularly loving one of the creatures you have inside your cabal right now, you’re going to want that next one, you’re always going to be wanting to try and just cycle something it cycles something out. Like you’re always craving that next demon, even if your current one is amazing. It is a genius system that encourages experimentation.

 And I love love, love it. The problem again is just that system where you’re stuck playing in the same tiny dungeon. It’s like I don’t care how many think that this game is like 30 hours long. I felt like I spent half of that inside these frickin subway tunnels practically falling asleep. Now, this does bring me to the soul matrix. So we did talk Talk about upgrade systems when it comes to the demons into the gear.

But the soul matrix is the final concept of it. As you upgrade your trust, as you mentioned, to make people love you more, this unlocks further doors inside the idea of the soul hack palace. So each of the people we’re playing as our characters that souls are tied to arts, Ringo, the main character, has managed to bring these people into her inner circle, they’re part of her team.

But now you can hack and go inside their minds, it doesn’t make sense. It’s kind of a goofy plot device because these people can even go inside their souls. But essentially what this means is that it is a labyrinth that the deeper you go, it unlocks more bonuses for the characters themselves, beating these inner demon bosses can give you new skills, new unlockables new magic new passive abilities, so you can do a heck of a lot more damage or take a lot more hits. It’s an interesting idea because it does encourage you to sort of love characters and encourage them to not just conversationally be stronger, but also be more adept at combat.

I like this system. My biggest problem is that again, the soul matrix is just kind of boring. It’s just as big QB environment that sometimes after a bit, a couple of hours of just going deeper and deeper and deeper. It doesn’t change up the demons doesn’t change up the mechanics. It doesn’t change up the aesthetic. It doesn’t even change the color palette. So hackers 2 feels very, very low budget, which is weird, because like, I don’t know, the other Atlas games make so much money.

How is it that persona is so big and so fantastic? How is Shin Megami Tensei so big and so fantastic? And then Soul Hackers too. It feels like this was done by a B team or a C team. They used a lot of the great assets, the great monsters and stuff that existed in their other games, and kinda made a very tiny spin-off. It’s good, but it’s not great.
