Controversial Fight Against Prichard Colon

However, his career took a tragic turn on October 17, 2015, when he faced the undefeated Puerto Rican prospect Prichard Colon at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia. The fight was a brutal and bloody affair, with both fighters exchanging heavy blows and landing illegal shots. After the ninth round, Colon’s corner mistakenly removed his gloves, thinking that the fight was over. However, the referee Joseph Cooper disqualified Colon for the infraction and awarded the victory to Williams. Colon then collapsed in his dressing room and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain. He was diagnosed with a severe brain bleed and remained in a coma for several months. He eventually woke up but was left paralyzed from the waist down, and unable to speak or walk.

The fight sparked a lot of controversy and criticism, with many blaming Williams for his repeated rabbit punches, and others blaming the referee, the ringside doctor, and Colon’s corner for their negligence and incompetence. Williams was deeply affected by the incident and expressed his remorse and sympathy for Colon and his family. He also faced legal threats and harassment from some of Colon’s supporters, who accused him of intentionally injuring Colon.

Terrel Williams took a two-year hiatus from boxing and contemplated retirement. He returned to the ring in 2017 and resumed his career with mixed results. He won four of his next five fights but lost his most recent fight against Thomas Dulorme by unanimous decision on September 21, 2019. He currently has a professional record of 18 wins, one loss, and 13 knockouts.

Williams announced his retirement from boxing in 2020, citing his desire to focus on his family and his faith. He also stated that he had lost his passion for the sport after the Colon fight and that he felt he had nothing left to prove in the ring.
