Thymesia Release Date:- It feels like there are 2 different styles of gamers that exist. Some love easy mode and play games predominantly for the plot. And then there’s Group B, those of us who love tough challenge games, that are difficult and that push you to be better. And I love doing that. I’m obsessed with Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I’ve platinum to Eldon ring, and I completely loved every second of thymine Sia. Now I want to talk about what this game is the goods the bards, the uglies, and why I feel like it’s just such a mind-blowing hidden gem that deserves your attention. What is it? If I have to describe it? This feels very much like a typical SoulsBorne like it’s a game that has very tight combat very heavy damage and lots of chances to counter very tough foes. But what makes it so great is a lot of these games have a slightly higher difficulty, in my opinion, it comes down to the controls beyond anything else Thymesia controls extremely well it has great Swing Time.

It’s got good dodging, it just feels so incredibly polished for seemingly how low the budget is. But there are a ton of secrets inside this game. So while I was reviewing this, I did everything. I found every hidden boss, I did every quest I found all the hidden items. I mean, the game is just so good. I put in way more hours than maybe was necessary because I got so addicted to it.
But let’s talk about the story real quick to establish the setting of the Misia so in this game we’re playing as a plague doctor named Corvus. Now Corvus is a little bit of a mysterious figure in these lands, some sort of plague has just swept across the nation, and a huge chunk of the population that got infected just instantly died. But some people instead evolved, some of them into monsters, some of them into freaks, and all of them into some very dangerous foes.
Now since you are a plague doctor, your mission is to travel to these different cities to these different territories and try and investigate a cure. Now, the big thing about this game that I want to say right up front is that honestly, it provides a tremendous amount of freedom. Now in most of these styles of games, most like dark soul style games, you have two separate main buttons, you have your strong attack and your fast attack, right? Well in this game.
Instead, what you have is a blade, which is your saber and claw. Now whenever I hit these folks, you notice that their health bar is just slightly lit up. This is called wounding. If you hit people who are infected with the plague, their wounds will seal shut their freakish Wolverine wannabes to get their wounds to stay open until they die, you have to claw attack them.

So and a lot of times you have to do a combination of fast attacks and strong attacks, your claw is pretty slow. But if you’ve managed to charge up and rip people open, it kills them relatively quick. Now the other aspect of the cloth system, which is quite frankly, just so good, is the plague weapon system. So your character can take weapons out of people’s hands. So if you’re hitting people, it doesn’t do like a typical disarm. But if you kill somebody and fully charge up your claw attack, you’ll rip out a clone of their weapon. So if they have a shield, you can do a special shield attack. If they have something like a big hammer, you can do hammer attack bows, you can do some long-range strikes.
Or if you just have something like a halberd or a big old saber, you can take those weapons. And this essentially becomes the very great magic system. So when you take these, initially it is a single-use item, you just take that one item out of their hand, and then it’s one-time use. But as you keep stealing items from people, this becomes permanently learned. It’s essentially a talent point system. So like if you have somebody with a shield or fire magic if you keep claw attacking them again and again and again. By doing this, you permanently learn their skills. In fact, even better than they do.

I decided to max out the bow and arrow I can now shoot arrows faster than the enemies for lower mana and honestly, it just feels great to be able to tap people and properly wound them before I move in for that big clock Hill. Now the biggest thing about this game is its speed of it. This is fast Corvus is freaking putting Sonic the Hedgehog to shame. You can hit quickly you can dodge incredibly quickly you are all over the place, but reaction time is key. This is one of those games that I feel like you have to be paying attention to every single frame. But it does feel more generous than other dark soul-style games honestly a lot of times these indie games I feel like they mess up the dodging mechanics.
They miss you though completely got a right to the ability to slide under a boss’s big strike or just get out of the range of somebody’s big Hunter, it is extremely good. But I do want to talk a bit about the leveling system and the talent point system. So while you’re leveling up, you get to put a point into different skills. It works like your typical Dark Soul-style game whereby killing people, you collect the little souls like a currency, in this case, called memories.
There are only three separate stats you can level up though. So you are choosing between a more clogged image more sacred damage or more health. But the other additional part of this that makes it much more interesting is the talent points. So whenever you level up along with getting these passive bonuses, you can start to get specific skill increases. Going into the talent tree is how you’re going to customize your particular Corvus to make it so you have more dodges, you can do things like you’re able to throw these feathers, you can shoot a little feather out by pressing L two.

Now it’s very, very weak. It’s like a tiny stung attack. But if you want, you can put a bunch of points. So you could do big huge wings strikes, regenerate wings faster, or even get a minute back for every feather that hits. Now I decided to put all of my points into safer strikes. This made it so that my combos were longer, they would do more damage. And honestly, it just makes it where I could get in people’s faces and stagger them incredibly quick when I specialized in declawed damage and into those talent trees and made it where I could do these incredibly fast claw strikes that stacked up a damage bonus.
And when it reached back stats, it would cure me. So if I hit somebody five times in a row with my claws, I was starting to get healed for like 5% of the damage dealt, which was crazy. It made it where there is this ruthless beauty to the talent system where seriously, you can make your character very different from other people, it makes it where you can sort of experiment because whenever you want, you can also completely reset the talent trees.
And I like this because for certain bosses, I don’t need passive bonuses or I don’t need the kill bonuses or item drop increase because I’m only trying to kill one box. Interestingly, you can tinker around with the way your character plays in such a fundamental aspect. But this does bring me to the final thing you can do, which is, of course, potion building.

I mean, you’re a plague doctor, of course, you’re an alchemist. So while you’re exploring these different levels, when you’re going against them, there are optional mini-bosses that are pretty tough. I mean, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. Some of these guys usually the first time I encountered them, would just rip me open and drink me like a Dr. Pepper on a cold day. But whenever you practice whenever you figure out their movement patterns, killing these guys gives you a special talent point that works for your potions, which means you can now actually give yourself more potions total more healing for the potions, and unlocked special ingredients.
So whenever you drink your potion, you’ll have more passive damage or more defense. Like it’s cool that you can do all this special stuff. But this brings me to the weirdest part of the entirety of Thymesia, which is the fact that 90% of the best content is hidden. It is secret it is unlocked and I feel like people are going to miss it did this absolute drive me bonkers? So there are only four bosses required to beat the game and you can beat them in a straight line. The entire game is basically like a flashback, you just have like this level select menu, and you just click which part you want to go to super easy peasy.

But here’s the deal. If you choose to play these levels again, after you’ve beaten them, it unlocks these things called sub-quests. Now when I first started playing them, I thought it might just be like, you know, additional objectives, but that’s not what they are. So when you’re initially going through a lot of these environments, you’re going to notice side pathways or locked doors that you can’t interact with. Well, these sub-quests end up opening up all these different sides pass to let you encounter new bosses new storylines, new additional bits of lore, completely new fighting mechanics, and even new plague weapons to steal.
So basically new magic you can find an unlock, and I’ll be straight up. This even leads to completely hidden maps like giant extra zones and crazy hidden bosses that are better than the main story bosses. And I feel like most people if you’re not paying attention aren’t just going to beat the couple bosses and go past the sub-quests. These sub-quests are the best part of the game and I’ve been that in the best way because this game is already so great.
