Belarus Hijack Plane To Arrest Journalist Roman Protasevich, EU Imposes Sanctions
Belarus – EU leaders have agreed to cut air links with Belarus as leader Alexander Lukashenko paraded a dissident journalist ‘Roman Protasevich‘ arrested after his flight was forced to land. European leaders meeting in Brussels hit back by agreeing to ban Belarusian airlines from the blocks airspace and urge EU-based carriers not to fly over the airspace. The block said that they would further add economic sanctions on Belarusian flight.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has condemned the incident and has called it outrageous. He’s also agreed to back the EU sanctions. Roger Savage is accused of extremism in Belarus of organizing riots and inciting hatred. Charges relating to his involvement in mass anti-government rallies, and which could see him jailed.
He of course denies these allegations as per the last reports that we have got. Now he used the messaging app telegram allegedly to broadcast footage of the protests as Belarus cracked down on media organizations.
It is quite deplorable as to walk through the Belarus authorities have done. I’m sure it is very much against the provisions of international law, as far as civil aviation rules are concerned that there is another aircraft that is using your airspace and obviously, Belarus would have given permission for its airspace to be used.
And then by putting fighter jet in operation with a force landed this aircraft and got one diffident out I think it’s quite deplorable and outrageous. And I’m not surprised what the European Union has action has taken.
But this is on the spur of the moment, just as soon as this thing happened. I’m sure there is more to follow, America also comes up with America, Canada, and the others will also come up with more in terms of economic sanctions, I think this is setting a very bad precedent that needs to be condemned in the strongest terms.
This procedure needs to be rarely nipped in the bud and all countries need to come on the same platform and maybe under the ages of a call the International Civil Aviation Organization based in Montreal and send out a very clear and strong message that this is not acceptable.
The action that has been taken by European Union, by the USA, Canada and I hope some others also will send out this very strong message that this is not okay. And if it were to happen in the future that very strong and stringent actions will be taken against the government.
